The aim of the Scripps Research Translational Institute is to use cutting-edge information technologies to bring individualized healthcare to the mainstream. With the growth of the healthcare technology industry and the significance of technology in research and practice, Scripps undertook the challenge of compiling all of this information into one secure, accessible, easy to use environment.

The Goal

The goal of this project was to build a Digital Health Library — one of the very first of its kind. Scripps Research Translational Institute, in collaboration with Achieve Internet, set out to deliver healthcare professionals with a free knowledge resource for medical devices.

The challenges faced were primarily with the sheer number of devices on the market and the vast amount of information available on each device. How can we gather all of this information organize it in a way that can be easily consumed by a user? Furthermore, how can we ensure that the catalogue is kept as up to date as possible? Considering this had never been done before, Scripps and Achieve had to keep a close touch point throughout in order resolve each of these issues faced.

A Searchable Catalogue

Keeping the user journey at the center of our build, designing a catalogue that was comprehensive yet easy to navigate was paramount. Our solution was to create a simple search results page, with a side toggle menu containing the different options by which to filter the results. This allows users to be as specific as possible in their search, narrowing down the devices according to status, category, function, body location, demographics, components and more.

Considering the increasing amount of health devices available, the Scripps team needed a simple way to manage new and existing devices. Giving users the ability to submit additional devices to be included keeps the catalogue up to date and helps medical professionals become aware of new technology that might be useful to their research or practice. Another benefit to this feature is that delegating the responsibility of entering device information onto the user submitting it shortens the approval workflow for new devices.

The PubMed Integration

Additionally, Achieve Internet implemented a PubMed integration, which searches the life sciences and biomedical search engine for any articles that mention the device and displays it on the health library page. This ensures that medical professionals are getting all relevant information regarding the device.

Drupal 8 Scalability

Having a CMS that was robust, yet scalable was important to Scripps. Building the Digital Health Library on Drupal 8 allowed for the ability to easily expand and adapt their library as the medical device industry grows and changes. They have room to add additional content or incorporate more features as their needs change, such as integrating a marketing or email automation platform that follows up with submitters on the status of their devices. They also have the ability to revise the taxonomies, terms, and keywords we’ve set in place without the help of a developer or an external agency.

Achieved

The result was a comprehensive knowledge resource containing all relevant information to the medical devices available to healthcare professionals. With this Digital Health Library, the medical community can be aware of new technology and learn about the tools they can potentially utilize in research and practice.
